“I first met Rumbaristas at La Petite Fabriek in Tournai, Belgium. The minute I got in, I could immediately smell paella, that was actually served that night. Although there’s just one Rumbarista coming from Spain, every time I think of this fantastic band, I must think of paella. So if Rumbaristas are paella, what would I be then? Probably borsh (a.k.a. bortsch, borschtsch, etc), which is a traditional Ukrainian meal, and as you might know, I was born and grew up in Ukraine, so somehow this does make sense. Sie versammelten sich um den katalanischen Rumbamusiker Willy Fuego und den französisch-italienisch-polnischen Akkordeonspieler Thomas Morzewski.

Verstärkt durch die Belgier Roel Poriau (Percussion) und Thomas De Smet (Bass), Rhytmuskönige des belgischen Kollektivs „Think of One“, steht „Rumbaristas“ für einen verrückten bunten Mix des lateinamerikanischen Einflusses, in Kombination mit der Passion der Balkanmusik.

Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine and living in Berlin, Yuriy Gurzhy is the founder of the Russendisko, Shtetl Superstars, RotFront and The Disorientalists. Yuriy released ten compilations on different european record labels, including the bestselling “Russendisko Hits” (2003) and “Shtetl Superstars – Funky jewish sounds from around the world” (2006), recorded three albums and toured extensively with RotFront. His latest productions are “Who Was Essad Bey?” (2017, with The Disorientalists) and “Bandera. Songs from the HipHopera” (2018).
