Immerse yourself in the world of CALLISTO, where innovation meets tradition and sonic landscapes are painted with bold strokes of creativity. Saxophonist Peter Van Huffel’s latest project is a bass-less quartet that skews the line between composition and improvisation. Featuring Peter on baritone saxophone and electronics, Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano, Greek pianist and electronics artist Antonis Anissegos, and German drummer Joe Herstenstein, CALLISTO offers a unique and profound approach to modern jazz with their debut album, “Meandering Demons.”

Peter’s innovative compositions serve as the backbone for this project, weaving intricate tapestries that combine structured elements with the spontaneity of free improvisation. Some pieces are expansive and suite-like, taking the listener on a journey of musical adventure and surprise, while others offer a slow build which develops gradually through subtle harmonic twists and layering of sound. The absence of bass in this ensemble offers the piano an extended space in which to explore the vast range of the instrument while trumpet and baritone highlight frequencies at opposite ends of the spectrum, giving the four-piece band an almost orchestral presence. With the addition of electronics subtly incorporated into the sound of the piano and blended at select moments with the resonance of the acoustic horns, CALLISTO is a captivating musical experience that transcends genre and resonates with jazz enthusiasts and adventurous listeners alike.

CALLISTO’s inaugural album “Meandering Demons” released in March 2024 on the renowned Portuguese avant-jazz label Clean Feed Records. This carefully selected collection of tracks showcases the quartet’s unquestionable chemistry, pushing the boundaries of the jazz tradition and inviting listeners into a realm of sonic exploration.

Founded collaboratively, this trio of established Berlin-based soloists brings a raw impulse to their original music alongside mutations and regenerations of ritualistic forms, rooted across improvised music, jazz, rock and noise. Initiated with a desire to get back to their previous experiences within collective bands of their youth, material is contributed, co- composed and developed by all 3 members – this forms the foundation for their uninhibited and urgent approach to improvisation. Through their combined experience as composers and improvisers not only in jazz and improvised music, but also in contemporary and new music, they explore the edges of what currently exists in the long- established framework of the ‘chordless trio’.

Vom „Originalitätswahn“ (Der Bund, CH) befallen, wünscht sich YSOP vor allem eins: ihre Zuhörer*innen aufhorchen zu lassen, sie zum Beobachten zu animieren, und mit einem Hauch freundlicher Provokation bei ihnen eine ganze Bandbreite von Emotionen auszulösen. Fünf Musikerinnen unterschiedlicher Herkunft betreten gemeinsam die Jagdgründe des Geschichten Erzählens und der Improvisation, und bringen dabei zur Sprache, was gerne unbesprochen bleibt: der persönliche Abgrund. Was als Liedzyklus mit dem Titel „Songs About Healing“ begann, hat sich mittlerweile zu einem abendfüllenden Programm entwickelt, welches die Themen Verlust, Trauer und emotionale Krise behandelt. In episodischen Abschnitten – die von abstrakt über konkret zu absurd reichen – bietet das Quintett meditative Geländer zum Verweilen, wohliges Unbehagen und manchmal sogar einen Grund zum Lachen. Die (für Jazz zumindest) unorthodoxe Besetzung mit Stimme, Violine, Posaune, Piano und Kontrabass vereint akustische mit elektronischen Klangfarben und brilliert mit einem ungewöhnlichen kammermusikalischen Sound.

Andrea Parkins’ and Eliad Wagner’s electroacoustic duo project tumbles and weaves through a thicket of sonic materials: fusing sounding objects – a sliver of stone, a bell on a string, a spring in a chamber– with electronic tones, rhythms and noise. Together, the musicians emphasize a unique performance approach, with a focus on gesture, haptic interaction, modes of listening and malleable instrument design.

Korhan Erel’s and Eliad Wagner’s “Only With You” infuse diverse techniques and electronic music styles into their performances and compositions. Their sonic tapestry is woven with a rich assortment of musical technologies – digital / analog synthesis, touch controllers, feedback, and traverses a spectrum of musical styles, ranging from early sci-fi sounds to the pulsating beats of contemporary dancefloor musics.

In dieser Stadt fließt so manches zusammen. GULFH OF BERLIN geben dem besonderen Mix einen Namen – sie schöpfen aus den afroamerikanischen Quellen der modernen Jazztradition, lassen freies Spiel, Energie, Trash, Humor und ein Quäntchen Undefinierbares einfließen. Ihr striktes Konzept ist zu hundert Prozent improvisiert, die facettenreiche Besetzung hält alles in der Schwebe, nur am Boden setzen sich hart erspielte Kompositionen ab. Das ist große Kunst – mit leichter Hand zusammengerührt.

In Michael Haves wurde nun jemand gefunden, der mit dem Gespür eines Produzenten den GULFstrom lebendig und in Echtzeit veredelt. Ohne den kompositorischen und spielerischen Fluss zu verändern fügt er eine elektronische Aura hinzu und wird so zum fünften Element des Prozesses.

Ab 2023 erweiterte sich das Projekt als sechstes Element um Antje Messerschmidt an Violine und Viola. Ab 2024 spielt Maike Hilbig den Kontrabass bei GULFH OF BERLIN.

Eine Interpretation von Improvisation als “spontanes Komponieren” offenbart sich hier als künstlerischer Akt höchster Authentizität. Gschlößls beeindruckende Virtuosität und Kontrolle auf Posaune und Tuba sind hier in einem seiner seltenen Solo-Konzert in der PANDA Kulturplattform zu hören. Von einfachen abstrakten Grooves bis hin zu kreativ- melodischen Hyper-Entwicklungen taucht jedes Stück den Hörer in eine musikalische Reise – geprägt von intensiver Energie und Humor.

Silke Eberhard am Saxophon und an verschiedenen Koreanischen Instrumenten, umgeben von Daniel Casimir und Gerhard Gschlößl, beide jeweils an der Tuba (Instrument des Jahres 2024) und der Posaune.

Die französische Presse schrieb über die CD „Bootleg“: “Überraschungen könne sehr fruchtbar sein… Der Dialog zwischen den Musikern ist fröhlich und wunderschön komplex, insbesondere im „Trio 2“, in dem Eberhard in der einfachsten Form, an der Schwelle zur Stille, auf dem engmaschigen Geflecht der Posaunen spielt. Eclectic Music eXtravaganza (EMX) is a collective of an international array of musicians who meet up in Berlin (and other world stages) to produce a very eclectic chamber music concert, a music salon for the 21st century. These artists stage an event that is beyond genre boundaries, a diverse jam session between jazz, rock, electronic and contemporary classical music. The first concerts they produced were subtitled “New York Meets Berlin”, since musicians mostly from New York came to Berlin to produce these concerts with local artists, but this has expanded to include performers from London, Duisburg, Rome, Vancouver, etc.

Schmolling and Roder will try to output a useful signal, while Raff causes disturbances. External noises from Schmolling are kept at bay by Roder and Raff. Sufficient separation of external voltages cannot always be maintained.

[ DEU ] Fremdspannungsabstand bezeichnet die Trennung zwischen Nutzsignal und unerwünschten Störungen oder Fremdgeräuschen. Schmolling und Roder werden versuchen ein Nutzsignal auszugeben, während Raff für Störungen sorgt. Fremdgeräusche von Schmolling werden von Roder und Raff auf Abstand gehalten. Ausreichender Fremdspannungsabstand kann dabei nicht immer eingehalten werden.

Zuweilen ist es eine verschlungene, dichte „Musique Concrète“, dann blitzen fantasievolle Anspielungen an Renaissance oder frühe Barockmusik auf. Aber mit so reichen Ressourcen nur um sich selbst zu kreisen, ist nicht Sache der 2018 gegründeten Band HILDE: Mehr und mehr schälen sich Songstrukturen aus diesen Klang-Szenarien heraus: Dabei bewegt sich die Musik aus einer frei wuchernden Individualität direkt in eine gemeinsame Mitte hinein. Aus dem Abstrakten sich ins Lyrische hervorwagen aus Songs und komponierten Elementen in freie Improvisation zurück, darum geht es den vier Musikerinnen.

HILDE veröffentlichte 2020 ihre Debut CD „Open“ (Umland Records). Im März 2024 erschien ihr erstes Studioalbum „Tide“ auch als Vinyl (Boomslang Records).

[ ENG ] Quiet intensity and a spiritual sense of sound characterize this duo. From the beginning, a tension builds in their music, in which the mere acoustic process turns into a musical event. A transcendent unity of meditative improvisations emerges. Lyrical melodies and percussive outbursts, which overlap with drum rhythms from the world of Bartok or Stravinsky, jazz-Africa-wildness, alternate with very quiet, almost inaudible atmospheric sequences.

[ DEU ] Ruhige Intensität, und ein spiritueller Klangsinn zeichnen dieses Duo aus. Von Anfang an baut sich in ihrer Musik eine Spannung auf, in welcher der bloße akustische Vorgang in ein musikalisches Ereignis umschlägt. Es entsteht eine transzendente Einheit meditativer Improvisationen. Lyrische Melodien und perkussive Ausbrüche, die sich mit Schlagzeugrhythmen aus Bartoks oder Strawinskys Welt überlagern, Jazz-Afrika-Wildheit, wechseln mit sehr leisen, fast unhörbaren atmosphärischen Sequenzen ab.

Die aus Großbritannien stammende und jetzt in Berlin lebende Julie Sassoon studierte klassisches Klavier und Violine und ist über den Jazz zur improvisierten Musik gekommen.

Willi Kellers war nach einem Musikstudium in Münster und Detmold als Theatermusiker auf verschiedenen Bühnen, von Bochum bis Wien tätig. Als Jazzmusiker arbeitete er u.a. mit Willem Breuker, Peter Brötzmann, Fred Frith, Phil Minton, Manfred Schoof. Besonders her– vorzuheben ist seine Zusammenarbeit mit Keith und Julie Tippett, sowie mit Marylin Crispell.

DEREK PLAYS ERIC ist eine hervorragende Live-Band, die virtuose Stilsicherheit mit Humor und zeitgemäßer Anknüpfung an Bekanntes in einer so intelligenten wie energiegeladenen Performance verbindet. Auch auf seinem aktuellen zweiten Album „Suite Of Soaps“ verhandelt das Berliner Trio DEREK PLAYS ERIC erneut nichts weniger als die Grenzen zwischen Jazz, freier Improvisation und Rock, zwischen der Avantgarde und dem Vertraut-Zugänglichen auf ebenso intelligente wie emotionale Weise neu. Das Trio um Andreas Willers besteht seit Anfang 2015; Grundidee war die nur halb unernst gemeinte Frage eines Kollegen, wie wohl seine beiden britischen Lieblingsgitarristen der 60er, Derek Bailey und Eric Clapton, zusammen geklungen hätten?

Diese Musik schwingt und swingt sich ganz entschieden ein in den schon ein gutes halbes Jahrhundert fließenden Strom des New Thing im Jazz. Sie ist ein nachdrückliches Bekennerschreiben der Nachgeborenen zu Dolphy, Coleman, Mingus und Monk (…) Silke Eberhards Musik kommt von da her und ist dennoch ganz und gar eigenständig. Im verwendeten Ausgangsmaterial der Kompositionen, im Gestus, in seiner Frische und Vitalität. Und im packenden improvisatorischen Zugriff. Sie führt ihren Hörer nicht ins Museum, sondern in ein Heute, das sich seiner Herkunft bewusst ist und spielerisch mit ihr umzugehen vermag.
